Haiku Poems – Howling through Trees

ghostwoods
Poetry & Illustration By Poet Rummager

Wind touches my skin,

and I shiver as winter

unravels my clothes.

I hear souls howling

through the trees in search of fruits

now out of their reach.

The decaying pelt

of once succulent berries –

dried and unwanted.

Frigid ice and cold

crush and numb this whirling pain –

a storm that must end.

Bones press against flesh

as death’s claws spread my rib cage –

filling up my heart.

Life ends; no more cares.

I leave my casing; a soul

dispersing in air.

  1. This is stripped down, stark and beautiful. Just the way I like ’em. The second haiku is my favourite; you really have a way of painting pictures with words. The illustration is a great match.
